[Buyer Guide] Touchscreen brightness

Quite a few of our clients are consulting for our advice on how to choose the touchscreen with the most suitable brightness. Similar to a display monitor, the major purpose of meeting the demanding screen brightness is the readability as a kiosk or /and visibility as interactive signage.

There are a few typical brightness available in the mainstream LCD market: by the unit of nits,250nits~300nits as indoor screen, 400~500as bright screen, 1000as high brightness and 1500~2500nits as ultra-high brightness.

 

250nits~300nits

As regular as your most common office desktop computer monitor and laptop display, this brightness is sufficient for long hours of comfortable reading and operation, but may be a bit limited in the interaction with a distance in a public place. If your touchscreen is installed indoors with regular light, and keep distance with the window or strong light source and used for close operation or service points, it is a good choose. Moreover certainly you don’t intend to restrain your clients’ eyes.

400~500nits

In the field, we call it a bright screen with a slightly brighter screen compared to above indoor use, the bright screen is perfect for window side, door side application and amusement industry. Recommended for window side kiosk and entrance check-in kiosk. However, there is a trend to use this bright screen as a replacement for regular 300nits screen to deliver an interactive and vivid display of the image. However, 500nits or exceeding 500ntis for indoor use may cause eye discomfort, especially long-time usage.

1000nits as High Brightness

They are perfect for outdoor touch display, with clear and high brightness for applications under the sun. For instance, shopping streets, and places of interest. Or outdoor lockers. To balance the brightness and still economical of power consumption, it is saving to add brightness auto-adjustment. Most are combined with anti-glare glass as a sunlight readability package. Users ought to pay extra care to the cooling of the touch screen monitor. 

 

1500~2500nits

This refers to outdoor extreme day light such as sunny day noon in a clear day or highlands. In a way,it causes high pressure for PCB and LCD on cooling from significant energy consumption from the display of high brightness.

 

Summary

The purpose of selecting the right brightness is to display a suitable brightness of media and words for your application environment. Low brightness might cause difficulty in reading and poor image display, However, if the brightness is too high for your use, it causes eye strains and discomfort.
